PASS Celebrates 40 Years

Today, the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, AFL-CIO (PASS), the union that represents over 11,000 employees at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Defense (DoD) including systems specialists and aviation safety inspectors, commemorates its 40th anniversary. The union was founded in Chicago on February 17, 1977, by a group of 50 FAA technicians who gathered to strategize about improving working conditions. PASS currently represents employees in five different bargaining units and continues to grow and expand its presence in the workplace.
“Today, PASS celebrates our 40th anniversary and recognizes four decades of representing the FAA and DoD professionals who ensure the safety and efficiency of this country’s aviation system,” said PASS National President Mike Perrone. “Thank you for keeping PASS—and the aviation system—strong for 40 years!”
PASS has worked over its 40-year history to ensure the safety and efficiency of this country’s aviation system as well as the federal workers responsible for its maintenance, certification and oversight. PASS believes the federal employees it represents are the most skilled, experienced and dedicated professionals, which is why we have taken a strong position that our aviation system will be served best by maintaining those services within the federal government.
“Our aviation system is strong today thanks to the work of employees represented by PASS for the past 40 years,” said Perrone. “And it will continue to be strong tomorrow if we are able to remain steadfast in our efforts to ensure the very highest level of safety and efficiency as we all work together to modernize the system.”
In recognition of PASS’s achievement, on Friday, leaders of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and Aviation Subcommittee introduced a resolution honoring PASS’s founding. In the resolution, Committee Ranking Member Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), Aviation Subcommittee Chair Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.) and Aviation Subcommittee Ranking Member Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) commemorated the date as the union’s 40th anniversary, congratulated the members and officers, and recognized the important contributions PASS members make daily to ensure the safety and efficiency of this country’s aviation system.
“PASS thanks the members of Congress for their recognition of our union,” said Perrone. “All of PASS is excited to enter into our fifth decade knowing that the federal employees we represent provide the safest and most efficient aviation system for the flying public. Now and always, PASS members ensure aviation safety, every step of the way.”
