OPM Security Breach Update

Earlier this month, PASS provided information on the Office Of Personnel Management (OPM) data breach. PASS is continuing to monitor the information and would like to provide you with some additional information.

At this point, you have most likely read much about the breach in the press and should have received information in an email from the Department of Transportation and some may have received a letter from OPM explaining the details. OPM began notifying impacted employees on June 8 on a rolling basis through June 19.  As this impacted nearly four million current and former federal employees, OPM has taken the lead in providing appropriate protection by offering credit monitoring services and identity theft insurance through CSID. It is highly recommended you take advantage of this offer by accessing OPM’s website as well as the CISD website specifically related to the OPM breach. Furthermore, the FAA continues to offer credit protection (as the result of earlier breaches within the FAA) and it is advisable to sign up for this now if you have not in the past by visiting this link on the FAA employee website.

Even if you have the FAA’s credit protection, it is recommend you add OPM’s since it offers a higher amount of coverage. At this point, you cannot have too much protection. Additional information can be found at the OPM’s FAQ page as well as at the Federal Trade Commission’s Identity Theft website.

PASS will continue to monitor this situation and evaluate if we need to exercise our bargaining rights/obligations to ensure our employees are protected.
