Focus on Collaboration at ATCF/ES Managers’ Forum

On April 1, PASS National Vice President Rich Casey participated in a collaboration panel at the Air Traffic Control Facilities/Engineering Services (ATCF/ES) managers’ forum. He was joined by ATCF Director Jodi McCarthy and NATCA Region X Vice President Mike MacDonald. The panel, which took place on the second day of the forum, was an opportunity to discuss the important role collaboration plays at the workplace with agency leaders.

“Collaboration gives PASS an early seat at the table,” said Casey when asked about its significance. “The union is included early in the process, and we are given a chance to assist in developing quality products and services. Collaboration does not just change the programs; it changes the agency culture.”

“Employee involvement and leadership involvement at all levels is extremely important,” said McCarthy, who is also a member of the PASS-Tech Ops Joint Leadership Team (JLT) along with Casey. “It is a commonsense approach to completing the work.”

The panel was asked about the challenges of balancing collaboration with matters relating more to labor-relations. “Collaboration is work. It takes time,” said Casey. “You are dealing with different people and different relationships. But it is so important to have those conversations early. It makes a major difference in future relationships and interactions.”

McCarthy agreed that collaboration requires significant effort by all involved. “It doesn’t mean we always agree, but it does mean that we are working together to solve problems that affect all disciplines.”

The panel encouraged the managers in the room to continue creating a collaborative work environment for all employees. “Communicate,” said Casey. “Have open dialogue. It can open doors.”
