Celebrating Workers on Labor Day

At the start of the 2014 Labor Day weekend, Mike Perrone, national president of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, AFL-CIO, released the following statement:

“Today, most think of Labor Day as a long weekend at the end of summer. But to me, it’s a time to reflect on what occurred many years ago and the reasons the day is recognized. Labor Day is a chance to acknowledge the struggles of those who came before us. Workers treated poorly, families just trying to make ends meet, employees toiling in poor and unsafe conditions. Out of these hardships rose the labor movement and the growth of unions. Through unions, workers were able to stand up and be heard. Unions truly helped America grow and flourish as members demanded respect for every worker. Labor Day is a holiday that deserves to be celebrated for the right reasons—paying due respect to the original union members who paved the way for us all.

“On this Labor Day, all of PASS will be recognizing the contributions of workers across the nation—past, present and future. As president of PASS, I will be celebrating what I consider the strongest labor force today: the members of PASS who work tirelessly every single day to ensure the safety and efficiency of this country’s aviation system.”
